WHY DO YOU LOVE MONEY SO MUCH, YES I'M TALKING TO YOU?
WHY DO YOU LOVE MONEY SO MUCH, YES, I'M TALKING TO YOU?
The Lord God authorized me to cultivate, enlighten, and empower Jesus Christ's nations and daughters in His love and grace. Please know this: I am not in the work of ministry to beg for money, but I do need financial supporters. I am in Christ's work and ministry to hear Jesus Christ say, "Well done, good and faithful minister." This is the everlasting reward we are expecting to hear and receive. Glory to God in Jesus Christ. ( Yes, Think ).
I am writing to you today to reflect on the spiritual danger of prioritizing wealth over our relationship with God. When we examine the scriptures, particularly 1 Timothy 6:10 and the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 6:24, it becomes clear that it is not money itself that is evil, but the love of money that serves as a root for all kinds of corruption.
When we allow the pursuit of wealth to become a master in our lives, it often leads to greed, dishonesty, and a departure from the contentment found in godliness. I want to challenge you to consider whether your focus has shifted away from your divine purpose and toward the material. Are we serving God, or have we allowed our possessions to become idols that distract us from the Kingdom? I invite you to contemplate these truths and seek a heart that values eternal gain over temporary riches.
The Apostle Paul, in his first letter to his young disciple, Timothy, had this to say: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” ( 1 Timothy 6:10 ). Now this verse is often misquoted as saying, “Money is the root of all evil.” Notice how “money” is substituted for “love of money” and “the root of all evil” is substituted for “a root of all kinds of evil.” These changes, while subtle, have an enormous impact on the meaning of the verse.
It is a common error to misquote 1 Timothy 6:10 as “money is the root of all evil.” This is biblically inaccurate, as the scriptures clarify that sin itself is the root of all evil (Matthew 15:19, Romans 5:12, James 1:15). In truth, wealth is morally neutral; there is nothing inherently wrong with possessing money. The spiritual danger arises specifically from the "love of money," which occurs when wealth transitions from a resource into a master that controls our hearts and directs our actions.
With that said, let’s consider the question before us: Why is the love of money a root of all kinds of evil? To help us answer this, we must look at the passage in its greater context. Near the end of the letter (1 Timothy 6:2–10), Apostle Paul is exhorting Bishop Timothy regarding the need to “teach and urge these things” to his congregation, “these things” referring back to earlier material in the epistle. Apostle Paul then warns Timothy about false teachers who will seek to warp and pervert the content of sound doctrine for their own greedy gain (verses 3–5). Now notice what the apostle says at the end of verse 5: “Imagining that godliness is a means of gain.” These false teachers do what they do for the fame and notoriety they achieve, along with the financial rewards it brings.
Elder Paul seeks to steer Timothy away from the trap of worldly ambition, pointing instead toward the true source of great gain: godliness coupled with authentic contentment. Biblical contentment recognizes that we enter this world with nothing and that every possession is a gift from God’s hand. Conversely, those who crave riches—driven by a love of money—are led into temptation and ensnared by their own desires, ultimately demonstrating how this pursuit leads to a myriad of sins and spiritual ruin.
Reflect on the practical truth of this principle: greed often compels individuals to act against their own character. Whether in fiction or real life, crimes are frequently driven by jealousy and the unchecked desire for wealth. Ultimately, when the love of money overrides one's spiritual priorities, it leads to dishonesty and malice, distancing the heart from the true godliness and contentment that God desires for us.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money” (Matthew 6:24). This verse comes at the end of a passage in which Jesus tells us to “lay up treasures in heaven” (v. 19). Here, Jesus likens a “love of money” to idolatry. He refers to money as a “master” we serve at the expense of serving God. We are commanded by God to have “no other gods” before the only true and living God (Exodus 20:3
Matt 6: 20-22, 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
22 “Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. Amen.
