NO TIME TO WASTE, BELOVED CHILD OF GOD:

Apostle Paul writes in (Ephesians 5:15–16 ): “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” This instruction is echoed in Colossians 4:5: “Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.” In both passages, “redeeming the time” is inextricably linked to the wisdom of how we “walk”—how we live our daily lives.

To redeem something means to buy it back or regain possession of it. Time is a precious gift from God, and since only He knows the number of our days (Psalm 139:16), we must live in constant awareness of the urgency of our mission. The NIV translates this as “making the most of every opportunity,” reminding us that rather than wasting our lives on frivolous pursuits that leave no lasting imprint, we are called to be diligent in doing good (Titus 3:8).

As members of the Jesus Royal Believers Way Saints Global Fellowship Family, let us commit to living with eternity in mind. Let us seek out wisdom, align our plans with God’s will, and seize every moment to glorify Him. As we navigate these days, let us choose to overcome evil with good, ensuring that our lives reflect the purpose for which we were created. We must work while it is day, for the night is coming when no one can work. Stay focused, stay faithful, and may you continue to redeem the time.

The context of the command to redeem the time helps us understand what redeeming the time looks like and why it’s important: “Be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life” (Ephesians 5:15–18). Redeeming the time means that we are careful in how we live. We seek out and employ wisdom (see Proverbs 2:1–15). We seize every opportunity and use it for God’s glory. We think through our plans and make sure they align with God’s will. And we avoid empty, harmful activities such as getting drunk. Why are we to live this way? “Because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:16). We must overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).

Jesus Christ taught His disciples the necessity of redeeming the time: “We must work the works of Him who sent Him while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work” (John 9:4). Jesus Christ was diligent about keeping to His mission. Distractions were as prevalent then as they are now, but He let none of them deter Him from preaching and teaching God’s Word. That was why He had come (Luke 4:43). Though He spent only 33 years on this earth, Jesus Christ changed the world forever because He redeemed the time.

“Someday I hope you get the chance, to live like you were dying.” As Christ Believers, we should live like we were dying and pursue all God has given us to do while we have time. Everything done for Christ on earth earns eternal rewards (Mark 9:41). That which was done for selfish, carnal reasons will burn up and blow away (1 Corinthians 3:12–15).

We can evaluate our unique gifts and interests to determine how best to invest them for God’s kingdom. Whether through volunteering, serving within our fellowship, leading a ministry, bringing Bible studies to jails and prisons, or diligently studying to show ourselves "approved unto God," there are countless ways to actively redeem the time (2 Timothy 2:15).

As James 4:14 reminds us, our earthly lives are like a mist that appears for a moment and then quickly vanishes. Our possessions will pass to others, and our daily roles will eventually be filled by those who follow us. Ultimately, what remains is only that which we have invested in eternity. As we reflect on our legacy, may we realize that the most important pursuit is how faithfully we have used our time to serve the Lord (Psalm 102:3; 144:4). Amen.
