Food For The Soul Jesus Believers!

Hello, Just sharing some meat for the soul in God's Word

In the Bible, God commended a group of people from the city of Berea (the Bereans) because they searched the Scriptures to make sure what they were told matched the Word of God. In Acts 17:11, it says "Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." It is wise for us to know exactly what the Bible says when it comes to how to be right with God and how to receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life.

The word "gospel" means "good news." The Bible says in 1Corinthians 15:1-4, "Now, brothers, I want to remind you of THE GOSPEL I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. (2) By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. (3) For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ DIED for our sins according to the Scriptures, (4) that he was BURIED, that he was RAISED on the third day according to the Scriptures"The gospel is the good news of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. In other words, the gospel is: Jesus died for our sins, He was buried and was raised the third day.

The Bible goes on to say that one day Christ will return. In 2Thessalonians 1:8-9, it says that "He will PUNISH those who do not know God and DO NOT OBEY THE GOSPEL of our Lord Jesus. (9) They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power"

How does one obey the gospel? How does one obey the death, burial and resurrection? Well, obeying the Gospel first starts with becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ. In John 8:31-32, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. (32) Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." What does Jesus say regarding how to obey the gospel and be saved? Well, John 3:3-5 says, "In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." (4) "How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!" (5) Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of WATER and the SPIRIT. "

Jesus said a person becomes born again by water and Spirit. One enters the kingdom of heaven by water and Spirit. Jesus, in Matthew 16:19 told Peter, the apostle the following, "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." We know that "keys" are used to allow entrance into a place. In this case, the "keys of the kingdom" allows us entrance into the kingdom of heaven. Since Jesus said the kingdom of heaven is entered by water and Spirit, the "keys of the kingdom" must, then, involve water and Spirit. And since Jesus gave Peter the keys of the kingdom, we should expect Peter to be the first one to tell people how to become born again. Guess what? Peter was the first. In Acts 2:37-38, it says, "When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" (38) Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, everyone of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

Here, Peter tells them to repent. The word "repent" means "change your mind and turn away from sin." The Bible calls lying, cheating, cussing, fits of rage, sexual immorality, homosexuality, slander, drunkenness, evil thoughts, divorce, ... "sin." when a person truly repents, they are turning from the thoughts and ways of sin and turning towards to God.

Upon repentance, Peter told them to be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. Baptism is born of water and of Spirit of water" part spoken of by Jesus.Baptism, by Bible standards, means to be immersed in water only in Jesus blessed name as found in Acts 2:38.

Then Peter tells them they will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. That's the "born of Spirit" part. Therefore, the "keys of the kingdom of heaven" is Acts 2:38, which says, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. "

Once a person makes a decision to change their minds and follow the ways of God (repent), he is to be baptized for the forgiveness of his sins and then, God will give him His Holy Spirit as a gift.

The Bible gives us deeper insight as to why baptism is for the forgiveness of sins. As we learned, Jesus died for our sins. We must be in Him to be born again. The Bible says in Galatians 3:27, "for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ." We are united with Christ at baptism. That is why Jesus said one must be born of water to enter the kingdom of heaven.

In Colossians 2:11-12, it says, "In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, (12) having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead." Therefore, as we see in this passage, Jesus circumcises us, that is, He cuts away our sin, when we are buried with Him in baptism. This is why Acts 2:38 says to be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. Baptism is the point where Jesus cleanses us of our sins.

Remember when we saw how 2Thessalonians 1:8 says He will punish those who do not obey the Gospel (good news)? Well, Listen to the words of Jesus in Mark 16:15-16, "He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. (16) Whoever BELIEVES AND IS BAPTIZED WILL BE SAVED, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." Therefore, one obeys the gospel (good news) when they believe and are baptized.

Are you ready to obey the Gospel? Are you ready to receive forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit by accepting the keys of the kingdom? Are you truly ready to turn from sin and make Jesus Lord of your life? Are you ready to be His true disciple? Jesus said in Luke 14:26-33, "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters-- yes, even his own life-- he cannot be my disciple. (27) And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. (28) "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? (29) For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, (30) saying, 'This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.' (31) "Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? (32) If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. (33) In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple"

Jesus is telling us that in order to become His disciple, we must put Him first above all others. The word "hate" here is the Greek word "miseo" which means to "love less." We must carry our cross, that is, crucify sin in our lives, and follow Him. We must give up everything to follow Him. Heaven is worth it all!

If you are ready to put Jesus first and surrender all to Him, then do not delay! Acts 22:16 says, "And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name."

Unfortunately, many of today's churches do not teach these things. Many today teach something called "the sinner's prayer" where a person is told to "ask Jesus to come into their hearts". No where in the Bible is this taught. In fact, the sinners' prayer is a doctrine that was started by a man named Charles Finney in the 18th century.
